Athens physician/activist and family face immediate eviction

A well-known physician, a cardiothoracic surgeon and former head of the thoracic surgery department at a large hospital in Athens, now practically unemployed, and his family face eviction under Greece’s recently adopted “fast-track” eviction process.

The eldest son, an economist with severe disabilities, also unemployed, was a parliamentary candidate in Athens constituency on the SYRIZA ticket during the May and June elections.

The family are now threatened with immediate eviction. They requested one month’s notice to leave the house where they have lived for 14 years. The owner refuses. They have been informed by their attorney that the eviction could take place today.

The family call for the immediate publicizing of this barbaric behavior by the ‘justice’ system and the landlord.

The family is determined not to allow authorities to enter their household, throw them out on the street and make them homeless using violence.

They have locked themselves in their home, a two-floor apartment on Delphon Street, no. 32, in Glyfada, behind the Glyfada cemetery, and will not allow access to any bailiff, police, etc. to break into their home.

Everyone needs to be informed of all the elements of this case that typifies the current drama of the average Greek family, drowning in a slowly evolving humanitarian disaster of which the austerity measures being applied by the Troika via the Greek government are the cause rather than the cure.

The father has been reporting on the situation in Greece since 2006, via Livestream, from the streets and squares of Athens and other localities. He has pointed out what is obvious to any enlightened observer – that the crushing austerity measures imposed by the successive Greek governments are aimed first of all at aiding the banks.
