From what I’ve been told by Fab, who has now left the camp to return to his home in the South, the President’s planned visit to La Défense today for the opening of the Marché de Noël was a rumor. From what I was able to find out, the camp is doing fine.
The UStream cameraman mentioned casually that the Marché de Noël was being set up – “getting ready to encourage people to consume like crazy, as usual”; “that’s what La Défense is all about – consumption (the shopping center Les 4 Temps) and finance (the corporate headquarters in the office towers).”
(info: The Les Quatre Temps shopping center at La Défense has 260 stores and restaurants – including McDonald’s, Starbucks, Lacoste, Guess, Esprit, Haagen Daazs, Toys’R’Us, Tie Rack, Virgin Megastore, etc. – as well as a post office, banks, medical parctitioners, etc., and is the largest in France in terms of sales. The La Défense quarter as a whole houses 2,500 companies with 180,000 employees as well as a residential population of 20,000 in 71 towers covering some 30 million sq. ft.
