- The neo-Nazi Golden Dawn Party, who won 18 parliamentary seats in Greece’s June 17 election, published an article on their official website calling for the sterilization and killing of all handicapped people or diseased people.

It should be noted that 50% of the Greek police force cast their votes for this ultra-nationalist party who ran a campaign that was openly hostile to immigrants, both undocumented and documented.

- The Vice-President of the union of small and medium-sized businesses was interviewed on Greek TV yesterday and made statements regarding the issue of lowering the VAT (sales tax) in Greek restaurants. Contrary to last month’s announcements made by the government-of-the-regime, the VAT will remain at 23% and will not be reduced to 13%, as originally promised.

After five years of a brutally imposed manufactured economic crisis, restaurants in Greece are struggling to remain open. The VAT remaining at high levels will lead to thousands of closures of restaurants in Greece as well as the loss of many thousands of jobs.

The union VP said he spoke directly with the Troika’s representatives and was told that the Troika does not have a problem with lowering the VAT in restaurants and that it was an issue for the government to decide.

But last week, in a meeting with the Undersecretary of Finance, he was told that the Troika would not permit the government to lower the VAT in restaurants. According to the Undersecretary of Finance, the intention of the government is to re-examine lowering the VAT next year.

The consequence of the VAT remaining high will make it even more impossible for families to be able to afford dining out in a restaurant. Small businesses in Greece like the restaurant industry have taken a huge hit because of the soaring unemployment rate and dramatically reduced pensions and wages. Within the last eight months, the number of visits the average Greek family makes to restaurants has dropped 80%.

- There is a fear, among the Greek people, that the Troika will insist on more austerity measures on top of the 11.5 billion €. It is being reported in the Greek press that an additional deficit of 1.5€ billion exists. Many people are speculating that it will be translated into new austerity measures.

——————

- A recent Der Spiegel article is promoting the idea that nothing can help Greece avoid bankruptcy and that bankruptcy is the only way for Greece to be liberated from debt and begin anew. Der Spiegel reported that once again, Greece has managed to disappoint its lenders and questions whether Greece will remain in the euro zone.

Many Greeks realize that if the current administration is allowed to remain ‘in power’ it will be a real catastrophe for the country. Giorgos Kosmopoulos from StopCartel TV proposes new elections for a new government who will represent the people and reject the failed IMF programs that are specifically designed to devastate and plunder sovereign nations.

- As the economic situation in Greece continues to worsen, reports indicate that hospitals and care centers throughout the nation are running completely out of medicines, and many healthcare workers are now voluntarily providing care services without pay.

On Tuesday morning, the mainstream media was on location at a central hospital in Athens to report on how the crisis is affecting the country’s hospitals.

Doctors, nursing staff, and administrative personnel stated that the lack of medical personnel at the nation’s hospitals has made it impossible to function properly. The hospital staff who remain at their jobs have gone unpaid by the state for months.

The President of the Hospital Workers was on the scene, but as an ironic twist, he was acting as a government-of-the-regime representative. He stated that he was under the impression that the Minister of Health would be there to begin a dialogue and expressed his regrets that this was not the case. Stunningly, he admitted that he receives his information about the problems in the hospital from the mainstream media!

He repeatedly lied to reporters, saying that the government is trying to sort out problems that have existed for years with experimental solutions. He did not elaborate on what those ‘experimental’ solutions were. He also said that it is not clear what sort of health system is wanted in Greece. He continued to dismiss the obvious truth by stating that local hospitals are serving the needs of the people of Athens, but conceded that there is an ongoing battle with the outpatient clinic.

The reporter asks if him if this problem exists due to the lack of personnel. Again, his reply was less than honest, stating that the health system does not function properly due to the lack of a good healthcare system outside Athens. Patients flock to Athens to be treated, he said. While that may have been true many years ago, it is not true now. The country’s hospitals were working very well until the crisis hit.

A doctor on the scene also expressed his disagreement and stated that there is a critical lack of personnel, causing a crisis in hospitals around the nation. He explained that the government has cut hospital staff by 35% and that the remaining staff have not been paid by the state for several months.

- This summer, wildfires are raging in several parts of the country. Two factors that are favoring the fires are the extremely high temperatures and the strong winds blowing across Greece.

On Wednesday, a huge fire raged through a forested area in Arcadia, located in the central Peloponnese. Members of the military were asked to join forces with the fire brigade to assist in the efforts to extinguish the roaring blaze.

From Greek Reporter:

In Arcadia, 135 firefighters were trying to extinguish the fire while 59 fire trucks, assisted by volunteers, were struggling to contain the blaze on the ground. The day before, six people were injured and four villages – Routsi, Voutsaras, Kamaritsa and Soulari – were evacuated.

Other firefighters have been sent to another front, in the Aghia Marina area in Koropi, Attica. Almost 30 firefighters along with 10 fire trucks and one water-dropping plane were trying to protect houses from burning.

Another fire broke out in Korinthia region, close to Solomos village. Some 26 firefighters, 12 fire trucks and three water-dropping planes headed to the pine forest of Solomos to try to control it. A smaller front broke out in the Kardamena area on Kos, with 14 firefighters and two fire trucks and two aircraft dropping water.

In the Pikermi region, about 30 firefighters were sent after a fire broke out in the area. According to the fire brigade, the front in the Damassi area in Larissa has been brought under control while others in Magnesia prefecture, Kythera island and Crete’s Ierapetra were brought partly under control as well.

- On Wednesday, Der Spiegel published an article entitled, “Europe’s 10 Most Dangerous Politicians.” SYRIZA leader Alexis Tspiras is number 2 on that list.

From Der Spiegel:

Alexis Tsipras, the leader of Greece’s leftist Syriza party: In his latest proposal, Tsipras argues the Greek government should refuse to talk to the so-called Troika comprised of the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund. He wants to “criminalize” the privatization of public enterprises. He has been labelled the “most dangerous man in Europe” since he became leader of the radical Left and has been pressuring successive governments to abandon austerity measures that underpin Greece’s continued access to international aid. What’s his goal? Tsipras is banking on the fact that the euro treaties don’t permit a country to be evicted from the euro zone — so he has opted for uncompromising opposition.

Tsipras, Der Spiegel says “[…] has been named ‘the most dangerous man in Europe’ because he leads Greece’s radical left which is always after the government, believing that no one can oust Greece from the euro.”

Giorgos Kosmopoulos from StopCartel TV published an immediate response, arguing that Der Spiegel’s characterization of Tsipras is a title of honor.

Later in the day, SYRIZA released an official statement mirroring Mr. Kosmopoulos’s sentiments, saying that it is an honor for Mr. Tsipras to be called the most dangerous politician in Europe because the slander comes from the very criminals who have manufactured this global economic crisis and who are responsible for the current humanitarian crisis and deep despair in Greece.

——————

- Peter Bofinger, a German economist and consultant to the German government, stated that the danger of the dissolution of the Euro zone increases daily.

The European International media continues to threaten the Greek people by its daily reports about Greece exiting the Euro zone. The threats only serve to increase the resolve of the Greek people to resist.

——————

- A statement made by the representatives of medium-sized companies in Greece says that the consequence of the 11.6 billions in austerity cuts will have an adverse effect on their sector. As a result, many more workers will lose their jobs, adding to already skyrocketing unemployment numbers.

Ironically, these very same companies supported the government-of-the-regime… until they were personally affected by the brutal austerity measures being imposed. No one is immune to the catastrophic consequences of disaster capitalism.

——————

STRIKES!

- The Greek Teachers Union announced that it will hold a General Strike on 12 September 2012.

- The Public Service Union of Greece is threatening a General Strike if the government-of-the-regime goes forward with the new austerity measures.

——————

- In yet another despicable move

… the Greek government is cutting the funding that supports nurseries and kindergartens for 53,000 babies and toddlers in Athens. This is going to cause a tremendous social problem for working parents.

- In the birthplace of the Olympics in Northern Greece, two young men committed suicide over financial problems. Greeks and supporters from around the world mourn daily as the suicide rate soars in Greece, as the crisis worsens. Some believe these are not suicides, but financial murders.

——————

- In the city of Ierissos, in Northern Greece, extensive clashes between demonstrators and rioting police were sparked when demonstrators attempted to protest the establishment and activation of a gold mine in their region and the environmental damage it will cause.

Around noon on Sunday, 5 August, a group of 400 local citizens along with six members of parliament from SYRIZA attempted to walk on a public road towards the designated area of the gold mine.

In response to the demonstration, the Mayor of Ierissos called the police. A public road was barricaded and the police refused to permit access to the group. When citizens verbally protested, they were attacked with chemical weapons and violence, turning the area into a battlefield.

MPs at the scene requested an official explanation from the police, in writing, of why citizens were not permitted to walk on a public road. The response from the police was negative.

An MP complained that at the same time members of parliament were attempting to negotiate with the leaders of the police, the rioting police unleashed massive amounts of chemical weapons on the demonstrators.

An elected local member of SYRIA stated that the MPs spent hours trying to convince the authorities to let them pass. They defended their right to have access to public roads and to protest at the site. Their efforts were met with more tear gas.

The people are aware that the police are acting as a private security force for big industrialists. The presence of the rioting police and their behavior against their own people creates a feeling that the region is under occupation, and this is quite unacceptable.

It is the right of every citizen to demand and exercise their right to walk on any public road and go wherever they wish. The citizens want to exercise their fundamental right of free movement.

Tensions in Ierissos escalated throughout the day – tensions created by public employees who engage in acts of violence against local citizens in order to protect the private interests of George Bobolas, owner of the gold-mining company.

The situation in the region remains very tense. Chemical weapons were being used throughout the night, transforming the city into a living hell.

Officials from the police defend their actions by laying the blame on the Mayor of Ierissos, who they claim falsely reported that the townspeople had set the Ierissos Municipal Building on fire. Obviously there was no fire, but that ‘technicality’ was ignored by the police.

- In Athens this weekend, police conducted an extensive racist attack against the city’s immigrants. The police reportedly rounded up thousands of suspected ‘illegal immigrants’ in a large-scale deportation drive. More than 6,000 people were detained over the weekend.

Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias said the rounding-up of illegal immigrants would continue, arguing that their unchecked entry has brought Greece “to the brink of collapse.” “Whoever is arrested will be detained and deported,” he said.

- The average income for Greek families has decreased by at least 25%. At the same time, certain goods are sold in Greece for 25% more than in other EU countries.

- The unemployment rate for young Greeks age 25 and under stands at 53%. Due to the uncertain future of Greek society, many students are choosing to emigrate to northern Europe.

Within a year the interest in studies in other countries has increased by 162%. Young people are trying to combine their studies with an eye towards future employment. They are seeking to study in countries that will permit them to enter the job market after completing their university studies.

The report states that this mass emigration to northern Europe also applies to students in Italy and Spain, where youth unemployment is also around 50%.

——————

- Starting in September, another unbelievable economic attack on Greek citizens by their government will come in the form of a so-called ‘tax tsunami.’ The first round of emergency tax bills have already been attached to the electric bills and posted.

In mid-September homeowners will have to pay another extra tax on their property. And at the end of the year, an emergency tax on automobiles will be due.

Current economic conditions in Greece make it impossible for citizens to pay the extra ‘emergency’ taxes. However, nonpayment will result in the state seizing private property and evicting the owners.

The following post is a loose transcript of the July 6, 2012 broadcast.

- In his speech in front of Parliament on Friday, Antonis Samaras, the Prime Minister of Greece, officially announced that his coalition government will begin the extensive and immediate privatization of Greece’s assets. On the chopping block are the public utility companies, buildings, railways, roads, ports, the airport and more. Everything is FOR SALE.

In addition, Samaras stated that he will continue to shrink the public sector, worsening an already devastating unemployment crisis. He also supports further cuts in wages across-the-board, a policy that callously ignores the current humanitarian crisis in his country. In Samaras’s Greece, everything is FOR SALE, including the lives of the citizens.

Samaras decorated his Neoliberal policy speech with general promises, including the ridiculous notion that somehow, by selling Greece for pennies on the euro to multinational companies and increasing unemployment, things will improve for the average Greek citizen.

Ironically, Samaras complained that the Troika has threatened to throw Greece out of the euro and back to the drachma, despite his traitorous willingness to immediately follow through with the sovereignty-killing, Neoliberal policies.

This indicates that the loan sharks are not satisfied with paying pennies on the euro for profitable public assets. No, they much prefer to devalue the currency by putting Greece back on the drachma before they further ravage the economy and sovereignty of Greece.

——————

- The Troika’s representatives of clerks, the IMF, ECB and EC, met in Athens on Friday. According to reports, they are ‘very upset’ because not enough progress has been made to fulfill the terms of the Faustian pact.

——————

- Everyday life for an average Greek may include seeing people of all ages forage through the garbage for food, bracing for news of the tragic daily suicides, selling off personal property, including family heirlooms, to pay for bills and food, and rising to action when neighbors are arrested for ‘stealing’ utilities. The Greek people shoulder all of this and more, while trying to maintain their deep sense of dignity.

The Peoples’ movement in Greece is very strong because the will and desire for liberation is heartfelt. This fuels and inspires the movement.

——————

- In London, David Cameron claims he will fence the UK off from the threat of a wave of Greek immigrants. Several EU countries are considering closing their borders to Greeks, Cameron stated, because of the ‘extraordinary stresses and strains caused by Europe’s economic crisis’.

Is this legal? Journalist George Eaton, says no. This kind of action goes against the fundamental principles of the EU Treaty. Countries who limit the immigration of specific EU citizens are abandoning the principles of Article 18 of the Treaty, which bans member states from discriminating according to nationality.

——————

- Unfortunately, technical difficulties prevented StopCartel from broadcasting live from the anti-racist festival in Athens this weekend. The crew at StopCartel opposes racism in any form and has a history of fighting for equality from South Africa to Athens.

——————

- StopCartel reports that when traveling outside Athens, the average Greek person over 40 does not use the internet. This portion of the population depends on the corporate-owned media for their news, so they are very ill-informed. Too many people have been brainwashed by the propaganda that echoes throughout the mainstream media in Greece, Europe and America.
