[…] Let’s review some of the latest evidence. Tehran has just sent two of its warships through the Suez Canal towards the Mediterranean; they docked at the Syrian port of Tartus – no less. Not so long ago, disgraced dictator and close House of Saud pal Hosni Mubarak would have probably bombed them.

Tehran cut off oil exports to the top European war poodles, Britain and France. That’s only 1% of British imports and 4% of France’s imports – but the message was clear; if the depressed Club Med countries insist on following Anglo-French warmongering, they’re next.

Brent crude is hitting $121 a barrel – an eight-month high. West Texas Intermediate, traded in New York, is hovering around $105. Brent is crucial, because it sets the consumer price for gasoline in most of the US and Western Europe. The neo-cons swore on their Bibles and Torahs there would be no oil spike. It happened – like clockwork, proving once again their knowledge of market speculation is of a two-year-old (no offense to lovely two-year-olds).

The funds Tehran is losing because of the sanctions – in terms of less exports to Europe – are being largely compensated by the oil-price spike caused by the neo-con-driven warmongering. On top of it, Tehran is bound to sell more oil to its top Asian clients – China, India, Japan and South Korea, and even Turkey, all of whom, with varying degrees of diplomacy, have told Washington to mind its own business. As a journalist, there’s a buzz you can detect once the normal restraints in your business have been loosened, a smell of fresh chum in the waters, urging us down the road to war. Many years removed from the Iraq disaster, that smell is back, this time with Iran.

You can just feel it: many of the same newspapers and TV stations we saw leading the charge in the Bush years have gone back to the attic and are dusting off their war pom-poms. CNN’s house blockhead, the Goldman-trained ex-finance professional Erin Burnett, came out with a doozie of a broadcast yesterday, a Rumsfeldian jeremiad against the Iranian threat would have fit beautifully in the Saddam’s-sending-drones-at-New-York halcyon days of late 2002. Here’s how the excellent Glenn Greenwald described Burnett’s rant:

It’s the sort of thing you would produce if you set out to create a mean-spirited parody of mindless, war-hungry, fear-mongering media stars, but you wouldn’t dare go this far because you’d want the parody to have a feel of realism to it, and this would be way too extreme to be believable. She really hauled it all out: WMDs! Terrorist sleeper cells in the U.S. controlled by Tehran! Iran’s long-range nuclear missiles reaching our homeland!!!! She almost made the anti-Muslim war-mongering fanatic she brought on to interview, Rep. Peter King, appear sober and reasonable by comparison. […]

A brutal police charge against high school students protesting against education cuts and police repression in Valencia has created a wave of revulsion throughout Spain.

Source: In Defense of Marxism

On Monday, February 20, dozens of students were arrested, hundreds had their ID cards recorded by the police and dozens of high school students and by-standers were injured as police brutally prevented them from demonstrating. The students from the IES Lluis Vives (12 to 17 year old) have been protesting against cuts in education which have left many infant, primary and secondary schools in Valencia unable to function properly, without heating, without basic materials and in some cases suffering electricity cut offs. Already last week, as they attempted to gather in a peaceful protest outside their school building, police charged against them injuring and arresting dozens of very young students.

Yesterday was just the latest attempt of the students to exercise their right to peaceful demonstration to protest not only against education cuts, but now also against police brutality and to demand their release of 8 students who have been kept in police custody since they were arrested last week. But the police in this region ruled by the right wing Popular Party was not prepared to allow them to march. As soon as they started to gather outside the IES Lluis Vives building, in the early afternoon, they were attacked by police in riot gear with batons who even used police vans to charge at them.

These clips show the main events:

In an article titled “Still No End to ‘Too Big to Fail,’” William Greider wrote in The Nation on February 15th:

Financial market cynics have assumed all along that Dodd-Frank did not end “too big to fail” but instead created a charmed circle of protected banks labeled “systemically important” that will not be allowed to fail, no matter how badly they behave.

That may be, but there is one bit of bad behavior that Uncle Sam himself does not have the funds to underwrite: the $32 trillion market in credit default swaps (CDS).  Thirty-two trillion dollars is more than twice the U.S. GDP and more than twice the national debt.  […]

Europe is nearing a tipping point – and it’s not so inconceivable that the ongoing financial crisis could descend into all-out war. With a second bailout coming down the pike for Greece – and more austerity – or starvation – on the way for the Greek people – hotter heads are speaking up. One being German Finance Minister Wolfgang Shauble. You see – when we’re talking about “bail outs” for Greece – or I should say bailouts for banksters who’ve invested in Greece and don’t want to lose their money – we’re essentially talking about German money. That’s primarily who’s footing the bill for these bailouts – along with Nordic nations. And Schauble – the German finance minister – is getting fed up. After all – it’s his job to make sure German money is invested wisely. And Schauble doesn’t see Greece – with its capital city of Athens on fire – suicide rates skyrocketing – and unemployment at 20% – as a wise investment.

So before forking over the money – Schauble is making some outrageous demands of Greece – the main one being that Greece should postpone their elections so a new government won’t come to power that may do what Iceland has done in two citizen referendums – say, “hell no!” to the banksters – including the German banksters. Think about that for a second – here’s one sovereign European nation – Germany -trying to prevent another sovereign European nation – Greece – from holding democratic elections. That’s where this financial crisis has brought us. As expected – Schauble’s demands have been met with anger and animosity from Greece. The Greek President called it an “insult.” The Greek Finance Minister suggested that a conspiracy was underway to have Greece kicked out of the Eurozone. And Greek newspapers are routinely publishing political cartoons portraying the Germans as Nazis.

So things are getting pretty nasty in Europe. The Germans – aside from Angela Merkel, who still thinks Greece can be saved – are growing tired of throwing their money down the blackhole Greek economy that’s being ravaged by IMF austerity measures. And the Greeks are on the verge of overthrowing their government which, itself, is now being run by an unelected bankster. Thanks to austerity spending cuts – schools in Greece are running out of books – people aren’t getting the medical attention they need with a 40% cut in the public health budget in 2010 – and now the IMF wants a 32% cut in the minimum wage – along with more lay-offs for government workers. That explains the riots in Athens. Even in an Occupy world, most Americans don’t know exactly how the 1% does what it does. The mainstream media hasn’t explained it, and the 1% likes things that way.

That’s why we’ve created a new video series unmasking those in the 1% who are exploiting the 99%—name by name, fact by fact. Each short video—one minute apiece—lays out the truth about a different tycoon. These aren’t opinions; these are facts, condensed into bite-sized chunks. Occupy has already revealed the country’s widespread outrage at the 1%; now it’s time for the plutocracy’s dirty deeds to be common knowledge.

The best part? Brave New Foundation’s audience chose the people we’re highlighting. We solicited suggestions on nominees, narrowed them down to 30, and let our audience vote on which ones they thought deserved to be exposed. The new videos represent five of the top vote-getters, with more videos below for the rest. Here’s one:
